How Does Bellafill Work To Last 5 Years?

Question: I’ve been getting Juvéderm and Restylane injections for 7 years. I’m tired of getting repeat treatments every 9 to 12 months and would like a longer lasting filler. What is it in Bellafill that makes it last 5 years compared to the 1 and 2 year fillers?

Answer: You are correct in that Bellafill is known to last 5 years, whereas temporary fillers like Juvederm and Restylane typically last 1 year or less. The difference between Bellafill and these short-term fillers lies in it’s special patented technology.

Bellafill consists of the Bellafill crystal and bovine collagen. Filling is seen immediately after injection due to the bovine collagen. Before this collagen is absorbed within months by your body, the Bellafill crystal has stimulated your body’s own natural processes to increase collagen production.

As you age, your collagen production slows down, resulting in a larger quantity of older collagen which is associates with wrinkles, deep creases and facial volume loss. As the Bellafill crystal increases your body’s natural collagen production, a greater amount of newer, younger collagen fibers are laid down resulting improved wrinkles, creases, hollows and sagging.
Unlike temporary fillers where the filling of lines, wrinkles and hollows is due to the filler material itself, the long term filling from Bellafill doesn’t come from filler itself but from your own collagen. The Bellafill crystal is well known, based on research and clinical studies, to continue to stimulate your body’s own collagen production not just for 5 years, but even longer in many patients.

In fact, the FDA clinical trial on Bellafill which followed over 1000 patients showed that well over 80 percent of patients were still satisfied with the results of the initial Bellafill injections, even at the 5 year mark. As a BellaDiamond injector who performs 500-600 syringes of Bellafill each year, I have had many patients return after the 5 year mark to say that the collagen laid down by Bellafill is still present. Of course, one is likely to age in 5 years so more Bellafill may be needed to treat the additional aging.

The FDA trial also looked at Bellafill’s safety profile and showed that the incidence of lumps and bumps was 1 percent or even less compared to the temporary fillers on the market. Bellafill has a very high safety profile.

The most important fact to consider when having a Bellafill treatment is to seek a highly skilled and experienced Bellafill injector. Someone who has extensive experience with temporary fillers is not necessarily going to give you a good result from Bellafill. Because of it’s 5-year duration, meticulous technique and precision is of the utmost importance.

Seeking a thorough consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who is highly knowledgeable of facial anatomy and experienced with advanced injection techniques is the first step in choosing your Bellafill injector.
