Question: I had a Juvederm treatment for thin lips but they now look unnatural and over-plumped. When I told my doctor I look like a “duck,” he said the filler would go away in six months. Is there a way to get rid of the Juvederm without waiting so long?
Answer: Yes. As long as the filler consists of hyaluronic acid (HA), it can be dissolved. HA fillers include Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm. Vitrase is a product available through a company that manufacturers medical eye products and is used “off-label” to dissolve HA fillers in the face.
I commonly use Vitrase for patients treated elsewhere. Vitrase typically dissolves HA filler in one to 24 hours. A Vitrase treatment usually takes a few minutes. However, Vitrase mostly only dissolves HA filler. Fillers like Radiesse, Sculptra, Silicone or fat don’t respond well to Vitrase.
I’ve used Vitrase to dissolve excess HA filler in the lips, nasolabial smile lines and hollows under the eyes. After the filler dissolves, I typically place a new filler as soon as a few days later, to fill in the area properly without an over-plumped or unnatural look.
Since I’m using Vitrase in patients who have had HA filler outside my office — rather than my own patients —we don’t keep Vitrase in stock but can order it within 24 hours. Vitrase has proved to be an effective solution to treating excess HA filler, so patients do not have to live with an unsightly appearance from improperly placed filler. It can prevent a patient from having to wait six to 18 months for an HA filler to dissolve on its own.
