Avoiding unnatural facial filler results

Question: I plan to have facial fillers for my hollowing face. In choosing a doctor, what kind of clues should I look for to be sure my face will look natural?
Answer: First, it’s important to select a plastic surgeon who is not only board certified but also specializes in the face i.e. a Facial Plastic Surgeon. Despite so many non-specialists in today’s facial filler market, facial volumization requires much greater injector skill than wrinkle filling.
Because volumization fillers are placed in deeper tissues, including deep skin layers, near fat pads and over bone, detailed knowledge of the complex facial anatomy and how it changes with age are essential. Unlike the body, a small area of the face can contain many overlapping nerves, blood vessels and muscles. If such facial areas are penetrated with a needle or filler, complications or poor aesthetic results can occur.
Your facial plastic surgeon’s aesthetic eye for balance and proportion is equally crucial. If deep nasolabial smile lines are filled when, in fact, the true cause is volume loss in the upper cheek, then solely filling the smile lines can look unnatural. If you have heavy jowls accompanied by droopy mouth corner grooves, filling the grooves can, in some cases, give the lower face a heavier, distorted look.
If hollows under the cheekbones are filled when volume loss also exists over the cheekbone itself, then filling of the lower cheek alone can give a puffy, unnatural appearance. As such examples indicate, a high level technical and aesthetic expertise is required to create natural looking results when it comes to facial volumization.
It is a misconception to think you should only seek a surgeon for surgery. Facial Plastic Surgeons have in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and expertise in both non-surgical and surgical facial aesthetic treatments. Each time you have a non-surgical cosmetic procedure by a less qualified doctor, you increase your risk of complications and poorer results.
