Bellafill Can Go A Long Way Compared To Temporary Fillers

Question: I had several Bellafill syringes for my deep nasolabial smile lines and was quite happy with the results. I noticed, however, that Bellafill comes in 0.8cc syringes compared to the 1cc Restylane syringes. Does that mean that compared to 3 syringes of Restylane, I would need more syringes of Bellafill to treat the same areas?
Answer: Having performed well over 2,000 syringes of Bellafill over the past 6 years, I find that one syringe of Bellafill goes a long way. While there may be a little less Bellafill in each syringe compared to the amounts in a syringe of Restylane or Juvederm, this difference has not affected the quality of my results when it comes to facial volumization with Bellafill.
One important reason is that while Bellafill does give immediate results, the collagen stimulation induced by the Bellafill crystals can result in further filling and volumization over time. On top of this, it’s not uncommon for patients to notice additional improvements 6 to 9 months later. This phenomenon is not seen with temporary fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Radiesse.
While Sculptra also works by stimulating collagen, it would be unusual for a patient treated with Sculptra to notice looking better 9 months down the road, but it would not at all be surprising to notice a slight boost in response 9 months after a Bellafill treatment. Besides, Sculptra only lasts about 2 years if you continue with yearly maintenance treatments. Whereas, Bellafill can last 5 years in the vast majority of patients.
It’s important not to be deceived by the amount of filler per syringe. Comparing Bellafill to temporary fillers is like comparing apples and oranges. For deep nasolabial folds, I tend to use the same amount of Bellafill as Juvederm or Restylane. I find this to also be the case when treating other facial areas such as the cheeks, temples and droopy mouth corners.
Consulting with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who is not only a skilled surgeon with a strong knowledge base on aging facial anatomy, but also an expert injector of both Bellafill and temporary fillers, is the first step in optimizing your results.
