Question: I have deep hollows under my eyes that make me look tired and aged. My friend had Bellafill® under her eyes and is very happy. Why did my surgeon say that Bellafill® cannot be used under the eyes?
Answer: The use of Bellafill® for the hollows under the eyes is considered “off-label” use by the FDA. However, Bellafill® treatment of this area is also a commonly-accepted standard practice for many cosmetic doctors.
Bellafill® is an especially effective filler for the hollow areas under the eyes. Unlike most other fillers like Restylane™ and Sculptra™, which can be used for only the inner part of the eyelid hollows on the nasal side, Bellafill® can successfully fill the entire length of the hollow.
In some patients, eyelid hollows appear as dark circles under the inner part of the eye. In these cases, the hollow is known as the tear trough. However, in other patients, the hollow extends all the way to the outer part of the lower eyelid.
Many temporary fillers must be put very deep over the bone of the eye socket to avoid a lumpy appearance, and typically only work for the hollow if it is under the inner part of the eyelid. Bellafill®, however, can fill the inner, middle and outer part of the lower eyelid hollow with lower risk of causing lumps when injected properly. Additionally, it does not need to be placed deep over the bone to avoid soft-tissue irregularities. Bellafill® can be also long lasting and natural looking in this area.
To determine if you are a candidate for Bellafill®, a careful consultation with your facial plastic surgeon should be the first step.
