Question: I’m in my 70?s and look tired and run down. I don’t want a facelift, but am interested in minimal invasive procedures to rejuvenate my face and treat the fat around my stomach. With so many minimal invasive treatments, how does one know which are any good?
Answer: Minimal Invasive treatments have become one of the mainstays of facial rejuvenation. The truth is that most patients prefer to avoid a facelift and aggressive surgery if possible. Twenty years ago, facelifts were the primary option. With today’s advanced technologies, effective non-surgical and minimal-invasive options that give effective results do exist.
A common misconception is that you only need a plastic surgeon for surgery, and that it’s okay to have minimal invasive treatments by a non-specialist who is less qualified. When it comes to facial rejuvenation, a board certified facial plastic surgeon has an in-depth understanding of aging facial anatomy and can also provide the full range of procedures from minimal invasive to surgery. A non-plastic surgeon is more likely to push the non-surgical procedures they offer even if you could get a much better result from surgery. This can reduce their objectivity in recommending the best option for your unique needs.
Kybella is a very effective non- surgical treatment for permanent fat reduction of submental fat under the neck. It is also used, off label, for fatty jowls and other areas of facial fat. Kybella requires an average of 2 treatments, depending on the patient’s needs.
Infini RF is a non-surgical skin tightening device that can lift sagging jowls, neck skin and droopy brows. There are many RF treatments on the market, but Infini’s unique technology allows for greater collagen and elastin stimulation as well as precise tailoring of settings for each patient’s unique skin thickness. Infini is also effective for fine lines and aged skin texture with no downtime. Infini RF can be a great substitute if you don’t want a facelift.
Bellafill is a 5-year injectable filler that I’ve performed for 6 years. I’ve injected over 3000 syringes, and it is the #1 filler requested by patients in my office. While Bellafill is more expensive than temporary fillers, patients find Bellafill to be much more cost- effective due to not having to refill frequently.
Restylane and Juvederm are effective injectable fillers, but typically last one year or less, depending on the problem. If you have an unlimited budget for frequent refilling, these injectables are options.
Botox is another effective non-surgical product for the right patient. There are now 4 FDA approved versions on the U.S. market including Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin, with the newest being Jeuveau. These products are all quite similar in terms of results and duration. Advanced Botox is also used to treat lip lines, neck lines and bands as well as sagging jowls.
Sculpsure is a non-surgical laser for permanent body fat removal. It is a more advanced technology than CoolSculpt. It is most popular for treating isolated pockets of fat in the abdomen and flanks with no downtime, but can also be used for other body regions. Unlike liposuction, Sculpsure won’t leave looser skin after your fat dissolves. Many patients seeking facial rejuvenation also opt to reduce their body fat with SculpSure.
Things can and do go wrong with minimal invasive procedures. In fact, some serious risks, for example, from facial fillers, are on the rise, partly due to the large volume of non-plastic surgeons entering the minimal- invasive cosmetic market. It’s very important to seek an experienced, highly skilled specialist, not just for surgery, but also for any minimal invasive treatments, if you expect a natural, balanced appearance.
If your face is important to you, don’t price-shop or cut corners. Seek a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who understands the complex facial anatomy of aging and is an expert in both surgery and minimal invasive treatments.
