Best Timing For Facelift Surgery

Posted: 5:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2016

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I am 54 years old with some sagging in my lower face and neck. Should I wait longer in order to see a bigger difference from surgery?

Answer: When it comes to a facelift, if you want a worthwhile result, timing is everything!

With age, our face and neck skin no longer resists the forces of gravity. We sag due to weakening and loss of collagen fibers. Mild to moderate sagging can often be corrected with a non-surgical “facelift” such as Infini RF. With severe sagging, a surgical facelift is indicated.

With progressive aging, more and more collagen and, even elastin are lost. With loss of skin elasticity, facial tissues are unable to retain tissue memory. The tissues don’t stay where they are surgically positioned to during facelift surgery and sag more rapidly.

Having a facelift in later years, once the tissues reach this stage, makes it much more likely to get short lasting result. Skin tightening lasers like Infini not only stimulate collagen, but also improve tissue elasticity. In some cases, Infini alone is a viable option. In others, Infini is combined with a facelift for optimal results. Infini to tighten and lift is often combined with Bellafill treatments to restore volume loss, as both procedures improve facial sagging. Additionally, Infini RF can be maintained, unlike a facelift.

The bottom line is that lasting results from a facelift are more likely at a younger age of 45 to 55 years when your skin elasticity is adequate. In our 60’s and 70’s, we can loose so much collagen and elastin that facial tissues lose memory and don’t stay in place as long. A facelift done at 50 years is likely to last longer than if performed at 65. However, in your 50’s, you may not need a facelift and desired results can be achieved with a non-surgical treatment like Infini.
