Do Facelifts Really Last Longer?

Posted: 10:10 a.m. Friday, Feb 20, 2015

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: Two plastic surgeons told me that the longest lasting result is with a facelift compared to fillers and laser. However, I know several people whose facelift only lasted a year or two. Should I have surgery or take the minimal invasive route?

Answer: This is a common question with no simple answer. First, consider choosing a plastic surgeon who performs a high volume of facial cosmetic procedures. Also, seeking a practice that offers both surgery as well as a high volume of injectables/laser treatments can give you more well-rounded options.

Having performed over 1,000 facelifts, I can share with you that, even with perfect surgical technique, facelifts may only hold up for less than one year or over 10 years. Many factors go into play, including skin elasticity, the pace at which you age and overall health.

It is misleading to think that facelifts last longer than filler and laser treatments. “Lasers” like Ultherapy and Infini may not give the same degree of lifting and tightening as a facelift during the first six months after treatment. However, after 6 months, the surgical result may not necessarily be superior.

Another misconception is that a surgical facelift improves all types of facial aging. Wrinkles, poor tissue elasticity and volume loss are not corrected with facelift surgery. Volume loss can be improved with injectable fillers. Safe and effective long term fillers such as Bellafil are now an option. Poor tissue elasticity makes one a suboptimal candidate for long term success from a facelift. Ultherapy and Infini can improve tissue elasticity and enhance the results of facelift surgery.

Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon to assess your unique rejuvenation needs is the first step.
