Question: I have saliva coming out the sides of my mouth. I want a filler treatment to lift my droopy mouth corners to help the saliva problem. What filler do you advise?
Answer: Saliva leakage from the mouth corners can happen with age as the mouth corners lose support. There can also be several other causes of salivary leakage, including neuro-motor dysfunction which can occur with age.
I have successfully treated salivary leakage successfully by injecting filler to lift sagging mouth corners, I always stress to my patients that it reasonable to expect filler injections to improve sagging of mouth corners, however, no guarantees can be made regarding improvement in salivary leakage due to its possibility of multiple causes.
I typically recommend deep fillers such as Radiesse, Perlane or Bellafill to lift droopy mouth corners which are due to deeper soft tissue aging. Superficial fillers like Restylane and Belotero have more limited effectiveness. Of the deep soft tissue fillers, a long term filler such as Bellafill, which lasts at least 5 years or longer, is the most popular choice in my practice. Despite Bellafill’s higher upfront cost, it is a most cost effective filler due to it’s lower maintenance costs compared to temporary fillers.
Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in identifying your facial rejuvenation needs and selecting the best options for you. It is a misconception to think you should only seek a surgeon for surgery. Facial Plastic Surgeons have in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and expertise in both non-surgical and surgical facial aesthetic treatments. Each time you have a non-surgical cosmetic procedure by a less qualified doctor, you increase your risk of complications and poorer results.
