Expanded Uses of Kybella

Posted: 6:00 a.m. Sunday, Nov 19, 2017

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I have very fatty jowls and bulging fat in my lower eyelids. I heard about Kybella for treating neck fat. Can Kybella be injected into the jowls and under my eyes?

Answer: Kybella is FDA approved for fat reduction in the submental area

under the chin. Kybella works by permanently killing the fat cells so that those fat cells don’t grow back. One of its greatest benefits is that is it a completely non-surgical treatment, unlike liposuction.

With the increasing use and success of Kybella, it’s is also becoming popular in its use in other areas of the face as well as the body. However, caution should be used in treating these areas which require a higher degree of injector skill. It should also be pointed out that the use of Kybella for areas outside of the submental fat area is considered off-label use, but can be performed when it is consistent with accepted standards of practice in our specialty.

I only consider advising Kybella treatments for heavy jowls when the jowls contain fatty tissue. If the jowls only consist of sagging skin, then other non-surgical treatments such as Infini RF can be offered. In more severe cases, a facelift may be needed. If a patient does not desire surgery, a popular treatment approach in my office is the use of Kybella for jowl fat reduction combined with non-surgical skin tightening with Infini RF.

As far as lower eyelid fat goes, the anatomy of orbit is very different from the jowls and neck. Because Kybella injections in the lower eyelid area can cause adverse effects, I don’t use it for lower eyelid fat. There are other treatments options that can be considered if a patient does not desire eyelid surgery.

Kybella can be a very effective and successful treatment in patients who are not only good candidates but also have realistic expectations. A thorough consultation with a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in helping you decide the best facial rejuvenation options for your individual needs.
