Question: I just turned 45 and have bags under my eyes, dark circles and laugh lines around my eyes. What is the best treatment?
Answer: Dark circles, eye bags and wrinkles can all be improved effectively, however, a multi-modality treatment approach is needed.
Dark circles are more often due to hollowing or volume loss under the eyelid rather than discolored lower eyelid skin. Hollows can actually be effectively treated with injectable fillers. While Restylane can last a year, Bellafill can last five years or longer without maintenance treatments.
“Eye Bags” are due to the eye socket fat protruding and becoming visible as bumps under the skin. Treatment is lower eyelid blepharoplasty, a surgery that takes 30 -45 minutes. If the lower eyelid fullness is mostly due to fat with minimal loose skin, surgery can be performed without a visible external incision.
Lines around the eyes can be treated with Botox cosmetic or Dysport when they are the type of wrinkles that worsen with facial expressions. Fine lines present around the eyes when the face is in resting position can be treated with Restylane Silk or Belotero.
Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in identifying your eyelid rejuvenation needs and selecting the best options for you.
