Question: A medspa ad for “Instant Facelift” without surgery showed a 72-year-old woman with sagging and wrinkles transformed into looking 40 years old. How can an “instant facelift” take 30 years off your face?
Answer: Not all physicians follow the code of ethics and professionalism when it comes to cosmetic procedures. Beware of prices that are too low. Also, remember that when it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Your face is the first thing people see. It’s harder to hide a mistake on the face unlike the body. Having a facial plastic surgery specialist who understands both facial anatomy and the anatomy of aging is crucial. Our complex facial anatomy contains many nerves, functional organs and deep tissues that sit tightly together in the facial space.
A doctor who is not a plastic surgeon, but is performing cosmetic procedures should put you on the alert. Simply because Medspas and “cosmetic” doctors are everywhere doesn’t make it right. Anyone can take a course on injectables and lasers. Quick courses can’t replace years of training and skill of a board certified facial plastic surgeon in facial anatomy, aesthetics and aging.
It’s a misconception to think that non-surgeons are used for minimally invasive or non-surgical cosmetic procedures and that surgeons only perform surgery. Facial plastic surgeons typically perform a high volume of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures on the face and neck. You can verify their credentials by logging onto the board of medicine website or to www.abfprs.org.
Important differences exist between plastic surgeons and dermatologists, the latter being mainly trained in the skin which is only one aspect of facial aging. Plastic surgeons are trained in both the skin as well as tissues and organs deep to the skin. A knowledge base of skin alone does not translate into a good understanding of facial aging, much of which occurs deep to the skin.
Careful consultation with a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in identifying the proper solutions for your unique aging concerns in the face and neck.
