Question: I have deep smile lines and puppet lines. I don’t want fillers since they don’t last and I have to keep doing them. When I use my hands to pull the skin back on my face, the lines go away. Would a facelift do the job so that I don’t have to maintain with fillers?
Answer: A common public misconception is that facelift surgery can fix most of our facial aging including deep lines. Another false belief is that surgery is a substitute for fillers and that you don’t have to maintain.
The fact is that aging is an ongoing process that doesn’t slow down, but actually can speed up as the years go by. Nasolabial smile lines and puppet lines are not necessarily due to loose or sagging skin. While you can create many different looks by using your hands to pull back the skin, facelift surgery is not as simple as pulling back with the hands. Surgery requires much more skill and training to understand the complex facial anatomic landmarks and to know how to avoid important nerves and blood vessels. A facelift allows one to lift sagging skin and muscle.
A facelift does not fill in deep lines which are typically the result of facial volume loss. Restoration of facial volume loss can be achieved with injectable fillers as well as stem cell fillers.
Like you, many of my patients don’t want temporary fillers due to their short duration and costly frequent maintenance. Bellafill is a very safe, FDA- approved 5-year filler that is commonly used to successfully treat deep smile lines and puppet lines. While Bellafill costs more per syringe compared to a one year filler, Bellafill is a much more cost effective option. Another advantage is that Bellafill looks very natural and can actually look even better over time.
Gone all the days where facelifts were the only option to facial aging. Today, not only do we have many more effective options but they are also less or minimally invasive.
Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in determining the optimal and most cost-effective facial rejuvenation options for you.
