Question: I am in the process of losing 30 lbs and have 12 more pounds to go. I’ve heard that you should not have plastic surgery unless you have lost all of the weight? Is this also true for injectable fillers like Restylane or Bellafill®?
Answer: While it is true that you should ideally be within 5-7 pounds of a stable weight prior to having facelift surgery, the same principles do not quite apply for facial fillers.
The effects of weight loss on the results of an injectable filler treatment depends on several factors. Certain areas like nasolabial smile lines, droopy mouth corners and under eye hollows can often be treated with injectable fillers before reaching a stable weight. Both Bellafill® and Restylane can work well in these areas. However, Bellafill® is more long term where Restylane typically lasts no more than a year.
Other areas like the temple and cheeks, can become more hollow after weight loss. Injectables such as Sculptra and Bellafill® work well for hollowing of the face. In such cases where areas become more hollow after weight loss, your surgeon may advise postponing filler treatments until you have reached your weight loss goal to improve the accuracy of the results. However, this is not true for all patients.
There are no hard fast rules when it comes to coordinating filler injections with the degree of weight loss because each patient’s anatomy varies and we all age differently. As part of your weight loss treatment regimen, also ask your Facial Plastic Surgeon about tightening and lifting of sagging tissues of the face and neck with Ultherapy.
If you are in the process of losing a significant amount of weight, a thorough evaluation by a skilled injector for the facial areas that you would like filled is recommended to enable you to plan ahead for the facial changes that can occur with weight loss.
