Question: What is the difference between a plastic surgeon and a doctor at a medical spa. If they are both MD’s and I’d like a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, why not go to a medical spa?
Answer: There are important differences between plastic surgeons and medical spa doctors who are not plastic surgeons. The cosmetic industry is filled with misleading advertising that can fool prospective patients into thinking they are getting the the same quality of treatment.
A plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon who is board certified has extensive training and understands the anatomy of surgery and aging. Rigorous board certification exams require us to stay updated on our skill and knowledge. It’s hard to believe that most medical spa doctors can come even close to the same level of expertise.
It’s often only when things go wrong that patients realize that they should have sought a qualified specialist. Isn’t it better avoid the risk of going to a non-plastic surgeon than learn your lesson the hard way? With advanced technology, many minimally invasive or non-surgical treatments these days do have risks that can be minimized in skilled hands.
Unlike many other countries, you are fortunate to have your choice of several trained, qualified and board certified plastic surgeons. Why would you bother seeing a doctor who lacks any one of these qualifications? If lower fees are the enticement, one must ask why the fees lower?
There is no substitute for doing your own research. Ask many questions about your doctor’s qualifications before seeking treatment. After all, you only have one face!
A thorough consultation with a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in assessing your facial cosmetic needs.
