Question: I am 50 years old and have sagging jowls but do not want surgery. Can filler injections in my cheek area lift up the jowls?
Answer: With advanced techniques, injectable fillers in the cheek/mid-facial areas can not only fill hollows but also help lift sagging. Sagging jowls have multiple causes so the treatments vary.
With age, we lose both bone and fat in our mid-face. This loss of cheek support can result in sagging of the cheeks and even jowls. Filling the mid-face/cheek area can restore support, volume and lift jowl sag.
Another cause of jowls is loss of elasticity and collagen in the skin and soft tissue, making them more subject to the downward pull of gravity. In this case, a surgical lift rather than filler injections may help.
Sometimes, jowls occur from a combination of loss of mid-facial support and poor tissue elasticity. Treatment may then require both injectable fillers and surgery.
Whether injectable fillers alone improve sagging depends on the cause and the degree of loss of mid-facial support. With severe sagging, effective volume restoration with fillers alone may not be enough.
Both temporary and permanent injectable fillers can restore volume and mid-facial support. A long term filler such as Bellafill® can be more cost effective. Temporary fillers like Juvederm™, Voluma™ and Radiesse™ are available, but with higher maintenance costs every 6 to 18 months.
A thorough consultation with a Facial Plastic Surgeon who is skilled in both injectable filler treatments as well as surgery for facial sagging is the first step in determining the most suitable options for you.
