Question: I’m in my 60’s and have wrinkles, sagging and hollowing in my face and neck but don’t want a facelift or any aggressive surgery. Is there some way I can look younger without having surgery?
Answer: Today, many patients are opting for minimal and non-invasive procedures for aging in the face and neck because they don’t want the risks and downtime associated with more aggressive surgery and anesthesia. There are many more effective non-surgical treatment options in recent years compared to 2 decades ago when temporary fillers and Botox first arrived onto the cosmetic marketplace.
The key point to understand when having minimal invasive treatments is that a combination of minimal and non-invasive procedures is often needed to achieve a worthwhile improvement. The main reason is that we age all over our face, once we get into the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, so that a single procedure which, for example, may improve wrinkles, will not necessarily address hollowing in the face. While many patients believe a facelift will improve all of the aspects of facial aging, that is actually not true as facelift surgery mainly improves sagging in certain areas of the lower face and neck.
Facial hollowing as well as wrinkles and fine lines are most suitably addressed with lasers, peels, botox and/or injectable fillers. Bellafill, the 5-year filler, is the most cost-effective choice for the treatment of deep lines and grooves as well as facial hollows in the area of the cheeks, temples, mouth corners or lower lid hollows. Temporary fillers suck as Juvederm, Sculptra, Perlane or Voluma can also work, with the main difference being that they don’t last nearly as long as Bellafill.
Sagging of the face and neck, if not severe, can be improved non-surgically with Ultherapy or Infini RF. Infini RF stimulates many more collagen zones than Ultherapy and also treats a wider range of concerns within the skin for more effective results. Another added benefit of Infini RF, unlike Ulthera, is that Infini can actually improve fine lines, wrinkles and aged skin texture while, at the same time, help tighten and lift sagging skin.
Botox, Infini or fine-line fillers such as Restylane can all work to treat wrinkles either alone or in combination, depending on the type and location of lines.
With the numerous minimal and less invasive options available, a thorough consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who understands the intricacies of facial aging and anatomy is the first step. During the consultation, you can learn about the various options and which are most suitable for you.
