Question: I’ve been getting facial fillers for years, but the maintenance every 6 to 12 months is costly. I let as much time pass between treatments as possible to save money but, as the years go by, I’m aging faster and need more filler. Do you have any recommendations on how I can save money on my maintenance treatments?
Answer: There are cost- effective approaches to facial rejuvenation treatments. Waiting until your Botox or filler is completely gone, however, is not the best way to save money. The following guidelines can help you get the most out of your filler, Botox and laser treatments.
Seek a specialist experienced in matching the right filler with your particular aging concern. If you get Restylane for deep nasolabial smile lines, your results won’t last as long as with Bellafill or Restylane Refyne which, while pricier than regular Restylane, can give you a longer lasting, more cost-effective result.
Identify the cause of the aging concern correctly. If your deep smile lines are due to volume loss in the cheek, mistakenly treating the smile lines directly could give a lack of or an unnatural result and be a waste of money.
Using the right amount of filler is very important. Most fillers have a threshold for adequate correction. If the correct amount of filler to meet this threshold is not used, you may not see much of a result or the result may go away quickly. Injecting the right quantity of filler increases your chances of a longer lasting result that is, in the long run, more cost- effective.
Use of safe FDA approved long-term fillers such as Bellafill, the 5-year filler, is more cost- effective than a short term filler which requires more frequent maintenance treatments.
Make sure you are on the correct maintenance schedule. For example, if you get 2 syringes of Restylane Silk for your fine lip lines for a 12 months result, I commonly recommend doing one Restylane Silk every 6 months instead of waiting the full year to get 2 syringes. This shorter maintenance plan allows you to get the same amount of filler over the course of one year and spend the same amount of money, but you can look more youthful because you don’t give the filler a chance to completely go away before your next treatment. In essence, you’re spending the same amount of money for a better result. Many skin tightening lasers should also be performed at the right maintenance interval to prevent your face and neck from sagging quickly and reverting to its previous state.
Make sure you’re getting the correct combination of treatments. For example, if you need Botox for hyperactive lip lines with Restylane Silk for static lip lines, it’s important to have a consistent maintenance schedule for both procedures. When too much time passes between maintenance treatments, your aging goes back to where you started and you may end up spending more money to catch up.
These guidelines are more likely to be recommended properly by a specialist who is an expert in minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. Too often patients don’t recognize the need for a specialist until it’s too late. It can be quite challenging to hide a mistake on your face. If your face is important to you, don’t price-shop or cut corners. Seek a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who understands the complex facial anatomy of aging and is an expert in your desired treatments of choice.
