Injectable Fillers Part II: Myth Vs. Fact

Posted: 6:00 a.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016

By Anita Mandal, M.D.

Question: I want to get fillers for my deep facial grooves and hollows but heard that fillers can move or make your face puffy and that long lasting fillers cause visible lumps over time. What would you recommend?

Answer: Part II is continued from my 3/27/16 article on injectable fillers.

Patients with poor filler results are commonly victims of poor injection technique, inferior aesthetic skill and/or lack of understanding of the complex facial anatomy.

MYTH 5: Temporary fillers are safer than long-lasting fillers since they go away if you don’t like the results – FALSE. FACT: Temporary fillers do not always absorb when they are supposed to. Using an expert injector with extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and aesthetic proportion is key to successful results from both temporary and long-term fillers. Physicians lacking high-level expertise have no business injecting any type of filler.

MYTH 6: Temporary fillers give just as good results as Bellafill – FALSE. FACT: Bellafill is not only a cost-effective 5-Year filler, but also gives smoother, more natural results in many more facial areas. Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane and Perlane are hyaluronic acids that attract body water, increasing water-retention and puffiness, so cannot be used in every facial area. In contrast, Bellafill stimulates your body’s own collagen for more natural results.

MYTH 7: I should not get Bellafill because most physicians are uncomfortable using it. FALSE. FACT: Bellafill is a safe, FDA-approved filler studied in more patients than any filler on the U.S. market. As a specialty filler, it should only be performed by an expert injector. The Bellafill company promotes “quality” physicians over “quantity”. Unlike Botox’s distribution to as many physicians and medspas as possible, BellaDiamond expert injectors perform high-volume Bellafill treatments with superior skills for effective results.

MYTH 8: Because Bellafill lasts so long, it “weighs down” your face, unlike temporary fillers that go away. – FALSE. FACT: Bellafill, when properly injected in a volume-deficient forehead, temple, cheek or eyelid hollow, does not “weigh down” facial tissues. Even in chin grooves, mouth corners and nasolabial smile lines, an expert injector knows how to inject specific, discrete areas to prevent the “weighing down” effect. I am unaware of research showing that Bellafill makes the face appear heavier or over time.
