Question: I’m interested in a permanent filler for my hollow cheeks and smile lines, and my surgeon recommends Bellafill®. But why did the company tell me that Bellafill® is not permanent?
Answer: While the company may say that Bellafill® is “semi-permanent” or not permanent, it is commonly thought of as permanent.
In Europe, a version of Bellafill® is used under a different name and has been shown to have a lasting effect. Since Bellafill® has only been in the U.S. market for a period of years, certain legalities prevent the company from claiming that it is a permanent filler.
Similarly, when Botox first arrived on the U.S market, it was only FDA-approved for glabellar frown lines between the eyebrows. Since the FDA had not initially approved Botox for other areas, such as crows feet, the company would not officially recommend Botox for treatment of other types of wrinkles, even though it was a commonly accepted practice.
It should be noted that even permanent fillers may require maintenance treatments. While Bellafill® may not disappear over time, we continue to age and may need additional treatments as the smile lines and hollow cheeks deepen further.
Careful consultation with your facial plastic surgeon to determine the most suitable filler for your particular areas should also include a discussion regarding the type of maintenance treatments, if any, that would be needed.
