Question: I am a 55 year old man with heavy eyelids and fat bags. My male friends think it’s too feminine to have cosmetic surgery, but my eyelids really bother me. How common is it for men to have their eyelids done?
Answer: According to a recent international survey, eyelid surgery ranks as the third most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the world, making up 13.1% of all cosmetic procedures.
Based on the survey of plastic surgeons, more than 276,000 eyelid surgeries were performed on men, with over 900,000 on women. The greatest number of eyelid surgeries, at 143,165, were reported in Brazil with the United States being a close second, at 141,505 eyelid procedures.
Eyelid rejuvenation is a significant, rising trend amongst men not only in the U.S. but all around the world. While women may have always wanted to look younger with age, men are finally catching up with the socio-cultural norms and feel more comfortable admitting that they equally desire to look youthful.
Despite eyelid surgery’s increasing popularity, the thought of surgery, especially around the eyes, can be a bit intimidating. It is important to understand that eyelid surgery is not performed on the eyes themselves and the eyelids are, in fact, a separate structure from the eyes. An eyelid lift is, in fact, a very safe cosmetic procedure. Since the eyelids are kept closed during the procedure, the eyeball itself is kept covered and protected during surgery.
For years, I have been using a less invasive approach to eyelid rejuvenation during eyelid surgery. In addition to performing the procedure in my office surgical suite, I use local anesthesia for the entire upper and lower eyelid operation. An oral sedative is also given but no IV’s are needed. This local anesthesia technique keeps the procedure time down to 1 to 2 hours, eliminates the side effects and grogginess of more invasive anesthesia, reduces risks of nosocomial infection, has shorter recuperation and lower cost compared to more traditional approaches.
Another key factor for optimal aesthetic results with lower risk is my approach to eyelid markings. I always mark the eyelids while a patient is awake and sitting upright since the eyelid tissues can shift radically once the patient lies flat and, thus, distort the surgical result. I typically spend extra time to mark the eyelids with a special measuring device. As little as one millimeter of error in the amount of skin removal can negatively affect the outcome. I have found this approach to be quite successful in giving natural, youthful results in eyelid rejuvenation.
