Question: I am 62 years old, and I have a sagging neck with a fat wattle under my chin. I was told I need a necklift but am wondering if liposuction can tighten my neck, as I don’t want extensive surgery.
Answer: As you age, the neck tissues lose elasticity and begin to sag due to the pull of gravity. Excess fat can also accumulate under the chin area.
Liposuction can be effective in patients under 40 since the overlying skin can more readily contract and conform to the newly shaped neck contour. However, in mature patients, liposuction alone does not work as well, since the skin does not contract due to poor tissue elasticity. In an older patient, tightening and lifting of the neck skin is often needed in combination with liposuction.
If you prefer not to have a necklift or other aggressive surgery, neck liposuction in combination with Ultherapy™ can be a viable non-surgical option. The Ultherapy works by tightening, lifting and contracting the overlying loose neck skin. Liposuction and Ultherapy™ can both be done on the same day, usually with minimal downtime.
This less-invasive approach is most effective if you have mild to moderate sagging of the neck skin with excess fat under the chin. In cases with severe sagging, a necklift or traditional facelift may be needed to achieve the desired results.
In fact, Ultherapy™ can also be used in combination with facelift surgery to give enhanced results when your are not a candidate for Ultherapy™ alone.
The most suitable option for you is best determined during a thorough consultation with your Facial Plastic Surgeon.
