Question: The hollowing in my cheeks makes my face look saggy and wrinkled. My doctor treated me with Juvederm and Radiesse, neither of which lasted more than two to six months. Can you recommend any longer-lasting fillers for cheek hollows?
Answer: My product of choice for facial hollowing, is Sculptra. Hollowing is typically due to loss of facial fat in the temples, sides of the face and under or over the cheek bones. Fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane tend to last a short time. While Radiesse lasts longer in the cheeks, perhaps six months, it is still not cost effective.
Fat injections have disadvantages since they involve surgery, resulting in prolonged swelling. Fat also resorbs, often requiring repeat surgeries to achieve final results. Since fat is permanent, any lumps that occur are also permanent.
Sculptra can last anywhere from two to four years. As an injectable filler in my hands, Sculptra is less prone to lumps than other fillers. In filling facial hollows, Sculptra can also indirectly reduce sagging along the jawline. Additionally, cheek wrinkles can also improve with Sculptra.
In my practice, I have found that Sculptra is superior to the other options. It is long-lasting with a low side effect profile, with the results being natural and effective. Once the initial treatments are complete, Sculptra maintenance can be very cost effective. In addition to filling in facial hollows, lifting of sagging tissue and softening of wrinkles as well as evening out of facial asymmetries are advantages.
