Question: While I would really prefer to have a long-term filler like Bellafill which lasts 5 years, in my research, I’ve learned that it is made up of PMMA. I’ve also learned that two other fillers called Arteplast and Artecoll were also made of the PMMA and caused a high rate granulomas and other problems. What makes the PMMA in Bellafill any different from that in the other two fillers?
Answer: The active ingredient in Bellafill is PMMA, also known as polymethylmethacralate. This PMMA is what stimulates your body’s own collagen and gives a 5 year result. While other products have contained PMMA, the PMMA in Bellafill is significantly different from that of prior fillers.
Bellafill is a third generation injectable filler consisting of PMMA crystals with unique properties that allow it to be very safe and effective. The numerous problems associated with the 1st and 2nd generation products, Artecoll and Arteplast, were related to their substandard formulations which consisted of larger PMMA particle size as well as uneven size and shape, making it easier for the PMMA to clump together to form nodules and granulomas.
Unlike Artecoll and Arteplast, the PMMA particles in Bellafill have been reformulated using very strict guidelines. Not only are the PMMA particles smaller in size, but they are also consistently uniform in size and shape. Additionally, a positive charge between the PMMA microspheres was created during the manufacturing process to keep the particles separated and evenly suspended within your tissues.

Unlike its 1st and 2nd generation predecessors, these special qualities give Bellafill it’s high safety profile. There is no other PMMA on the market like the one in Bellafill. Bellafill’s superior formulation combines a high safety profile, effective results and longevity like no other injectable filler on the U.S. market today.
