Misconceptions About Minimal And Non-invasive Procedures

Question: I had a mini-facelift by another plastic surgeon who sold me on it by saying it was minimally invasive compared to a regular facelift. I have huge scars in front and behind my ears and don’t look much better. The minimal invasive and non-invasive procedures sound good, but do they actually work on anyone?
Answer: First, a mini-facelift is NOT minimal or non-invasive. Mini-facelifts are invasive surgery involving incisions, sutures and cutting of tissues. While most mini-facelifts are less invasive than a standard facelift, that does not imply that they are minimal or non-invasive.
Secondly, minimal invasive refers to injectables such as botox, kybella and fillers as well as many lasers, ultrasound and radio frequency devices used to lift, tighten and/or smooth out the skin. When these procedures do not involve puncture or entry through the skin, then they can be categorized as non-invasive rather than minimal invasive.
Minimal and non-invasive procedures are quite effective when performed on the right patients. It’s also important to have realistic expectations. For example, a 35 to 45 year old can often get near-full correction with 1-2 syringes of Bellafill or an Infini treatment series. A 60 to 70 year old patient wanting a minimal or non-invasive approach may need 5 to 10 syringes of Bellafill in combination with Infini, Kybella and Restylane treatments. The older you are, the more aging concerns develop, requiring combination therapy with much more product and treatment sessions as well as higher costs to achieve the desired results.
If you don’t want aggressive surgery, there are no cheap, quick fixes. In addition to unrealistic patient expectations, the surging numbers of non-plastic surgeons offering minimal and non-invasive procedures combined with a relatively shrinking percentage of skilled and qualified physicians doesn’t help. Many physicians, not even board-certified in facial plastic surgery, often lack a detailed understanding of facial anatomy and aging.
With an older population in Palm Beach, patients who are happy with their results from less invasive procedures not only have realistic expectations but also understand that the costs of minimal and non-invasive procedures are similar to that of surgery. Unlike surgery, minimal and non-invasive procedures offer significant benefits including less downtime, less anesthesia, fewer to no incisions and lower risks when performed by a qualified and board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon.
Realistic expectations and proper physician selection play a key role in satisfying results and happy patients.
