Question: I’m in my 60s and noticed that, as I’ve gotten older, my chin is starting to hang and look more pointed. This makes my lower face look more like that of a witch. Is there any surgical procedure that can remove the excess tissue over my chin?
Answer: What you are seeing with your chin is most likely not due to growing tissue. What happens with age is that bone and fat loss occurs in the areas above and around the chin, resulting in the appearance of a hanging chin.
With this type of “witch’s” chin, the solution is not really surgical. Removing chin tissue won’t even help. Instead, the correct approach is restoration of lost volume above, below and on either side of the chin using injectable fillers. The areas requiring volumization include the mental or chin crease, the sunken area between the mental crease and lower lip, the mouth corners and marionette lines.
While many filler options exist, including temporary fillers, my filler of choice is Bellafill due its high safety profile and 5 year duration as well as long standing stem cell fillers.
Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in assessing your facial rejuvenation needs.
