Question: I’ve been getting temporary fillers in my face for years. I’m quite happy except for the costly maintenance of repeat treatments when the filler goes away. I’d like a permanent filler like Bellafill® but won’t a permanent filler sag with the rest of my facial tissues over time and cause even more facial drooping?
Answer: While I am often asked this question by patients as well as other doctors, I have not found Bellafill® to worsen facial sagging when properly injected.
Proper injection not only means the use of skilled technique but also a keen awareness of where to inject and how the different facial units age. As an example, I rarely inject Bellafill® or other fillers at the jawline in the groove in front of the jowl. While many doctors use fillers in this groove to lessen the appearance of jowls, I find it makes the lower face look heavier and more aged. On the hand, I more commonly use Bellafill® in the forehead, temple, eyelid hollows and cheeks because the results are youthful and natural looking.
Bellafill® is unique in that it’s more easily injected into multiple tissue depths, including at more superficial levels. When placed within a superficial tissue plane, it’s stimulation of the collagen in this layer can not only counter the effects of gravity on deeper tissues, but also help smoothen overlying skin.
Careful consultation with a facial plastic surgeon who is also a skilled injector is the first step in determining if you are a candidate for Bellafill®.
