Should I Try A Short-Acting Filler Before Having A Long-Term Filler?
Question: I’m really interested in Bellafill since I’ve had Juvederm, Restylane and even Sculptra, but they don’t last long enough. Since I’ve never had filler in my cheeks, would it be better to do a trial with a temporary filler first to be sure that I like the results before moving on to Bellafill?
Answer: The answer to your question comes down to (1) how confident you feel with your doctor’s injector skill and (2) how comfortable you are with the quality of the long-term filler.
Regarding one’s confidence level in their doctor’s injector skill, the value of seeking a skilled injector cannot be overemphasized. With so many non-plastic surgeons performing filler treatments today, the overall skill level seems to have diminished while statistics show that the number of complications from injectable fillers is on the rise.
It’s easy to take a one week training course on injectables, but that’s not even close to what you learn during the many years of training required to understand the complex facial anatomy. While injecting a few fine lines with temporary fillers may seem simple to do for the average injector, sculpting the cheeks or temples to create a balanced, proportional and natural look requires a much higher skill level and understanding of aging facial anatomy. Treating very deep smile lines and droopy mouth corners can also be complicated when performed by the average injector. It’s no surprise there are so many unnatural looking results that we see almost every day.
In terms of one’s comfort level with a 5-year filler like Bellafill, it’s important to seek a physician injector who has a “surgeon’s mind-set”. Many non-plastic surgeons have jumped on the bandwagon of injectable filler treatments. With temporary fillers, it’s easier to tell a patient who doesn’t like the results, that the filler will go away soon.
Most surgeons know that they can’t tell patients that their surgery will go away if they don’t like the results. Seeking an expert injector who has the skills and experience to get it right on the first round, one with a “surgeon’s mindset”, is an optimal choice when going with a long-term filler. Of course, Bellafill’s high quality and safety profile, as confirmed by the more than 1000-patient FDA study, doesn’t hurt either.
A Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who understands the deeper facial structures as well as the anatomy of the aging process and is a highly experience injector is an optimal choice for sculpting the cheeks and other facial areas with long-term fillers. Of course, don’t forget that whoever you choose for your cheek volumization treatments should have extensive experience with Bellafill injections. With such a winning combination, you shouldn’t hesitate to go directly to a long-term filler and bypass, altogether, the temporary injectables.
