Question: I have numerous deep wrinkles over my cheeks and sides of my face. I had laser resurfacing for the wrinkles around my mouth but was left with white scarring. Are there options other than resurfacing?
Answer: In addition to tightening and lifting of facial tissues, Ultherapy™ can be effective for the treatment of certain facial wrinkles. It is commonly used to soften lip lines and crows feet — also known as laugh lines around the eyes — as well as those stubborn cheek wrinkles.
Ultherapy™ stimulates the rate of collagen regeneration in the tissues. Ulthera is considered by the FDA as “off-label” use for treatment of wrinkles. Not only can it be effective in the treatment of cheek wrinkles, it does not have the downtime or side effects associated with laser resurfacing or chemical peels.
A single 30-minute treatment of cheek wrinkles is typically associated with minimal to no downtime. Gradual wrinkle improvement can be seen over a period of three to four months without the higher risks of scarring, loss of pigmentation or skin flaking seen with CO2 laser resurfacing. There is no special after-care, and makeup can be worn immediately after treatment.
When cheek wrinkles are significant or if cheek hollows are present, combination treatment with Ulthera and Sculptra, also known as Sculptherapy, may be needed. Since the heat from Ulthera can dissipate the fillers, it is best to perform Ulthera first, followed by Sculptra treatments afterward.
