Unraveling False Claims About Bellafill

Posted: 6:00 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I like the idea of a 5-year filler like Bellafill for my hollow cheeks and temples. However, I’ve spoken to a few other plastic surgeons who say it only lasts a year or two. Why are there such differences in what doctors say about Bellafill?

Answer: Bellafill is a high quality injectable filler that lasts 5 years. This fact is supported by my experience, as a BellaDiamond injector, in using over 2000 syringes and being in my 5th year of using it. Further proof lies in the compelling Bellafill FDA study which shows a very high level of patient satisfaction with Bellafill’s 5-year duration. Most doctors and patients don’t know that Bellafill has actually been studied in at least 1500 patients. That’s more patients than any FDA-approved filler currently on the U.S. market.

As far the false claims by some physicians that Bellafill only lasts a year, there are several key questions you should ask these doctors before you take their words as fact.

  • How many syringes of Bellafill do they inject each month?
  • How many years have they been using Bellafill?
  • What specific injection techniques do they use to create aesthetically satisfying results?
  • How many total syringes have they injected to date?
  • How comfortable are they with injecting Bellafill, compared to temporary fillers which go away much quicker in the event of injector error?
  • Especially important is to ask how many syringes is your doctor using for specific facial areas to achieve adequate correction?

The average patient with hollow cheeks requires a minimum of 5 syringes, whereas depressed temples need 4-5 syringes. Deep nasolabial folds are typically corrected with a minimum of 2-4 syringes, as is also the case for droopy mouth corners.

Bellafill is mainly used for facial volumization, not fine lines. When you volumize the face, you must create three dimensional filling. Unlike two dimensional line fillers, facial volumization requires width, length and depth within a given area. Because of this 3D requirement, much more filler is needed to volumize compared to the smaller amounts used in 2-dimensional facial lines.

When patients come to my office for a second opinion, a common reason why their facial volumization was unsuccessful by their previous doctor is that not enough syringes were used.

While Bellafill is more costly than temporary fillers, in the long run, it’s much more cost-effective, given it’s 5 year duration. Many doctors with lower-volume Bellafill practices fear that if they charge higher fees for more syringes, they will lose the patient. I am a firm believer in recommending the correct amount of filler and being upfront about the higher costs of Bellafill. You are just as likely to lose the patient if you charge them less and give them a less than satisfactory result.
