Question: I’m getting Bellafill in my cheek hollows, but for my lip lines, I’m told that I a need fine line filler like Restylane. It’s so confusing as there are so many types of Restylane. How do I know which Restylane is right for my lip wrinkles?
Answer: There are currently 5 different types of Restylane on the U.S. market and it can be confusing for the lay person to understand the difference. Unlike Bellafill which is a 5-year filler, works by stimulating your body’s own collagen, and can be used in many different tissue levels of the face, the Restylane products are hyaluronic acid that only
last 3 to 15 months depending on the type of Restylane used and your body’s unique response. Each type of Restylane can only be injected into specific depths in the skin or for specific aging concerns.
Restylane Silk is a smaller molecule and most suitable for very fine lines such as around your lips and chin. I often use it in combination with Bellafill placed in the nasolabial folds and droopy mouth corners to rejuvenate the entire lower facial area. Restylane silk can last a few months to up to one year.
Restylane is used for slightly deeper lines and and can last 6 months to 12 months. I also use it to give lip definition and reduce “lipstick bleed” by injecting the lip vermilion, also known as the upper and lower lip border.
Restylane Lyft can be used for thin lips, deeper smile lines, droopy mouth corners and hollow cheeks but may only last 9 to 15 months, compared to Bellafill which lasts 5 years.
Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne are similar to Restylane and Restylane Lyft, respectively, except that the Refyne and Defyne versions are more flexible once injected into the tissues. This quality makes them ideal for treating hyper-mobile tissues such as the lips and lower facial wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to go away quicker in high-motion areas whereas the Defyne and Refyne versions settle better within moving facial tissues and, thus, can last longer than Restylane or Restylane Lyft.
A Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in helping you to decide if you are a candidate for Bellafill, the 5 year filler, one of the temporary Restylane fillers or a combination of both fillers for optimal facial rejuvenation results.
