Question: I would like fillers for some of the deep lines in my face? Is Bellafill different from Bellatero or are they the same product?
Answer: There is a big difference between Bellafill and Bellatero. Firstly, Bellafill is a 5 year filler which works by stimulating your body’s collagen. The filling you see from Bellafill, in the long run, is the result of your own natural collagen. Bellafill is ideally suited for facial volumization in filling hollow cheeks, temples, lower lid hollows, deep smile lines and droopy mouth corners.
In comparison, Bellatero is a hyaluronic acid (HA), a temporary filler, which lasts less than a year. Other HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Voluma have a similar mechanism of action as Bellatero. The filling you get comes from the hyaluronic acid injection material rather than collagen stimulation. Bellatero works best on fine lines like those around the mouth and can be placed in the lips as well. However, Bellatero is not designed to be injected into deeper tissue layers so it does not work well for hollowing, deep lines or to lift droopy mouth corners.
One important point is that when it comes to temporary fillers like Bellatero, if it’s supposed last up to a year, this really means that about half of the filler will be gone by about 7 months. So the maintenance interval for a temporary filler that lasts up to one year would actually be about once every 6-7 months or so if you are going to properly maintain the results.
Unlike Bellatero, Bellafill does not work like a temporary filler. Not only can it last 5 years but at the 5 year mark after the initial injection, the majority of patients were still happy with the results in the FDA trial which studied more than 1,000 patients. This means that halfway through at 2.5 years, most of your Bellafill is unlikely to just go away. If you need more Bellafill before the 5 years has passed, it’s more likely because you have additional aging requiring a bit more filler.
Another big difference is that with Bellafill, because of its collagen stimulatory properties, patients often notice that the results can look even better over time, 9 to 12 months later. This unique characteristic of Bellafill is not seen with Bellatero or other temporary HA fillers.
While the names are similar and can sound confusing, Bellafill and Bellatero are completely different products. Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who understands the differences between the various injectable fillers and how to most effectively use each type is the first step in determining the most suitable options for your unique needs.
