Why Two Syringes of Bellafill May Not Do It

Posted: 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 10, 2019

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I have hollowing in my cheeks and am 68. I saw a dermatologist who recommended Bellafill because it lasts five years. He did two syringes of Bellafill on me. It looked good at first but it’s been two months and I don’t see any difference.

Answer: The cheek area typically requires a much larger volume of injectable filler than other facial areas. This is particularly true in patients of your age range unlike someone in their 40?s who may be able to get away with just two syringes if, in fact, they have mild cheek volume loss.

The amount of filler needed in the cheeks, for the most part, has nothing to do with the actual type of filler used. In other words, you would likely need the same amount of filler in your cheeks, regardless of whether you choose to have Bellafill, Radiesse, Sculptra or Juvederm.

My average patient who has Bellafill or most other fillers in their cheeks requires five syringes. Two syringes may work for the nasolabial folds or mouth corners but the cheeks are a much larger facial area and typically require much more. I would not jump to the conclusion that your Bellafill did not “take” since there seem to be more obvious reasons as to why you didn’t see the desired results.

Facial volumization requires a higher technical skill level and aesthetic eye on the part of the injector. For anyone considering facial volumization, I always recommend seeking out a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon with extensive experience in facial contouring with injectable fillers. Unfortunately, a surgeon who is skilled in surgery is not necessarily equally skilled in using injectable fillers for facial contouring. Do your research!

If your preferred choice of filler is Bellafill — the five year filler — then it would be a good idea to seek a BellaDiamond injector in the top 1 percent of Bellafill injectors. Unlike the temporary fillers on the market, Bellafill is a specialty filler producing very effective results with a high safety profile when used in the right hands.
